Then The Stories of Canmore Book Club is for you! \nFor national indigenous history month\, the Stories of Canmore Book Club will spend June exploring the book These Mountains are our Sacred Places: The Story of the Stoney People. This learning series will include four workshops led by the Reverend John Snow Jr and other members of the Snow family. John is descended from the Treaty 7signatory Chief Jacob Goodstoney of the Stoney Nations. John teaches\, lectures and advises colleges\, universities and museums. He holds an M.A. in Political Science in Public Policy\, Law and Administration from the University of Calgary. John has served as Governor at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and is now Governor Emeritus. \nBook Overview\nFirst published in 1977 to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the signing of historical Treaty Seven by the First Nations of southern Alberta and the Canadian government\, These Mountains Are Our Sacred Places has become a classic of Western Canadian literature.\nThese Mountains Are Our Sacred Places is a result of extensive research. After consulting archival records and the Stoney oral tradition\, Chief John Snow describes with clarity\, depth\, and understanding the Native perspective on life since the birth of Treaty Seven in 1877.\nWith compassion and detail\, Snow describes the stable state of First Nations prior to contact with Europeans and the destruction wrought by the whisky traders. He records the period of treaty-signing and the failure on the government’s part to hold to treaty agreements. And most importantly\, Snow explains his people’s feeling of dispossession that continues to threaten the very survival of Stoney beliefs\, values\, and lifestyle. \nThis Event\nStoney Oral History & Book Overview | Thursday June 3rd | 4-5:30pm\nTeacher: John Snow\nA discussion of the entirety of the Book beginning with the Oral Tradition of the Stoney. The chapter of Treaty is critical to the history of the Book as an Indigenous perspective is rarely considered in literature\, historical and biographical circumstances. The final part of the book is an analysis of Healing from an Ecumenical perspective and a vision of wellness that is sought by Indigenous people on Turtle Island today. \nUpcoming Events in the Series \nTreaties & Residential School| Thursday June 10th | 4-5:30pm\nTeacher: The Reverend John Snow Jr.\nA discussion of the Treaties and Residential School experience provides Indigenous insight on the very abusive policies that reverberate to this day. A main reason for the Apologies of the various Churches and the Canadian Government to Indigenous people. \nHealing at the Ecumenical Conference | Friday June 18th| 4-5:30pm\nTeacher: Tony Snow\, Indigenous Lead\, Chinook Winds Region\nThe review of healing at the Ecumenical Conference held in Morley. A site of rejuvenation and reconciliation that provided for a National Day of Prayer. This historic call and event have now been transformed into the National Indigenous Day activities that include Prayer\, Tradition\, Culture\, and several other observances from an Indigenous perspective. \nIndigenous Place Names | Thursday June 24th | 4-5:30pm\nTeacher: Bill (William) Snow\, Interim Director\, Consultation\, Stoney Nakoda Nation\nThe reconciliation act of renaming places in the Indigenous name and perspective is a recent phenomenon that is gaining notice and traction since many prohibitive and regressive legislative barriers have been removed and a new understanding of Indigenous history and interpretation is rising in Western society. \nThis Learning Series can be subscribed to as the series only; individual event tickers are not available.

To continue our focus on community mental health and wellbeing\, we will deep dive into the topic of mental health and the complicated ways it is tied to sports and families in both positive and negative ways. Angie Abdou\, author of many books including Home Ice: Tales of a Reluctant Hockey Mom\, as well as her new book This One Wild Life: A Mother Daughter Wilderness Memoir will talk about her own experiences with the emotional ups and downs of engaging in competitive sports. As a varsity athlete herself\, and a hockey mom\, Angie will draw on personal experience to lead this exploration. \nAngie Abdou has written six books and co-edited Writing the Body in Motion\, a collection of essays on Canadian Sport Literature. A starred-review in New York’s Booklist declared her best-selling memoir\, Home Ice: Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom\, “a first rate memoir and a fine example of narrative nonfiction.” Angie Abdou is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Athabasca University.  This One Wild Life: A Mother-Daughter Memoir is now available in bookstores and online. \nHome Ice: Tales of a Reluctant Hockey Mom\nOver 570\,000 people are registered in Hockey Canada and over 600\,000 in Hockey USA. DESCRIPTION:On May 6\, join us for a special book club event as we discuss the powerful memoir Open Heart \,Open Mind with the author and six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes. From one of Canada’s most decorated Olympians comes a raw but life-affirming story of one woman’s struggle with depression. \nIn 2006\, when Clara Hughes stepped onto the Olympic podium in Torino\, Italy\, she became the first and only athlete ever to win multiple medals in both Summer and Winter Games. Four years later\, she was proud to carry the Canadian flag at the head of the Canadian team as they participated in the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. But there’s another story behind her celebrated career as an athlete\, behind her signature billboard smile. \nWhile most professional athletes devote their entire lives to training\, Clara spent her teenage years using drugs and drinking to escape the stifling home life her alcoholic father had created in Elmwood\, Winnipeg. She was headed nowhere fast when\, at sixteen\, she watched transfixed in her living room as gold medal speed skater Gaétan Boucher effortlessly raced in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Dreaming of one day competing herself\, Clara channeled her anger\, frustration\, and raw ambition into the endurance sports of speed skating and cycling. By 2010\, she had become a six-time Olympic medalist. \nBut after more than a decade in the grueling world of professional sports that stripped away her confidence and bruised her body\, Clara began to realize that her physical extremes\, her emotional setbacks\, and her partying habits were masking a severe depression. After winning bronze in the last speed skating race of her career\, she decided to retire from that sport\, determined to repair herself. She has emerged as one of our most committed humanitarians\, advocating for a variety of social causes both in Canada and around the world. Mining played a crucial role in the development of Canmore and therefore a deep dive into Alberta mining will give us insight into the formation of our own community. \nADRIANA (ALBI) DAVIES is a well-known researcher\, writer\, editor and poet. She was the Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association for thirteen years and Executive Director of the Heritage Community Foundation for ten years. Under her leadership\, the Foundation created the Alberta Online Encyclopedia comprising 84 multi-media websites\, which were gifted to the University of Alberta in 2009. She is the author of From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (2014\, University of Calgary Press) and co-editor of The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (to be published by the University of Calgary Press in 2016). Dr. Davies was invested in the Order of Canada\, in 2010 for her contributions to heritage. In 2015\, she was awarded a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) by the Government of Italy for her contributions to the preservation of the Italian language and culture\, and her research and publications on Italian immigration to Canada.

As social and cultural agencies\, museums can help foster healthier\, more inclusive\, sustainable and connected communities. This book brings to life the untold story of Italian immigrants in Alberta from the 1880s to the present. It places them in the narrative of province building from work on railways\, mines and other industries to breaking the land for agriculture. Oral history excerpts allow the men\, women and children to speak for themselves. What emerges is an unquenchable desire to make good\, and overcome intolerable working conditions and discrimination\, which culminated with enemy alien designation and internment during the Second World War. The book also provides an exploration of the impact of Government of Canada’s multicultural policy on the process of assimilation for the post-war influx of immigrants. It offers a prototype of an immigrant community’s movement from marginalization to the mainstream. \nThroughout April we will be joined by Dr. Davies for deep dives into the research process and coal mining.

Mining played a crucial role in the development of Canmore and therefore a deep dive into Alberta mining will give us insight into the formation of our own community. \nADRIANA (ALBI) DAVIES is a well-known researcher\, writer\, editor and poet. She was the Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association for thirteen years and Executive Director of the Heritage Community Foundation for ten years. Under her leadership\, the Foundation created the Alberta Online Encyclopedia comprising 84 multi-media websites\, which were gifted to the University of Alberta in 2009. She is the author of From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (2014\, University of Calgary Press) and co-editor of The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (to be published by the University of Calgary Press in 2016). Dr. Davies was invested in the Order of Canada\, in 2010 for her contributions to heritage. In 2015\, she was awarded a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) by the Government of Italy for her contributions to the preservation of the Italian language and culture\, and her research and publications on Italian immigration to Canada.

At the Biosphere Institute she leads the Shift Program. In this role\, she uses a variety of community engagement tools to empower Bow Valley residents to take meaningful action on climate change. Her responsibilities span from evaluation of local renewable energy potential\, to organization of participatory workshops\, to authoring a monthly newsletter with tips about how to reduce your carbon footprint. Jodi is motivated by a long-standing interest in climate change issues\, sustainable living and human-wildlife conflict resolution.\nPrior to joining the Biosphere Institute\, Jodi’s career focused on human-wildlife conflict\, mitigating the environmental impacts of development projects\, and habitat enhancement. Jodi has also worked in education\, providing onsite wildlife education and supporting science and technology departments within schools. She has several years of experience working in management in both the environmental and hospitality sectors.

Adriana will share stories of Italian Internees in World War II\, reading from her own book From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History and sharing letters and journals from Internees. \nDr. Adriana Davies  \nAdriana (Albi) Davies was born in Grimaldi\, Cosenza\, Italy and grew up in Canada. She received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Alberta\, and a Ph.D. from the University of London\, England. Her thesis topic was “The Art for Art’s Sake and Decadent Movements in Nineteenth Century English and French Literature.” \nFor more than 40 years\, she has worked as a researcher\, writer\, editor\, lecturer\, executive director and curator in England and Canada. Professional accomplishments include: Science and Technology Editor\, The Canadian Encyclopedia; Executive Director\, Alberta Museums Association; and creator and Editor-in-Chief of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – www.albertasource.ca. In 2009\, the 84 multimedia websites were gifted to the University of Alberta. \nDr. Davies has a range of publications including authoring about one-third of the entries for the Collins’ Encyclopaedia of Antiques (London: Collins\, 1973; New York: Random House\, 1974); Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 1 (London: Batsford\, 1979) and Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 4 (London: Batsford\, 1981). \nHer most recent publications are the critical biography From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2014); The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello (Fernie: Oolichan Books\, 2015); and The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2016)\, an anthology that she co-edited with Jeff Keshen\, former Dean of Arts\, Mount Royal University\, Calgary. Her newest publication\, “From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History” will be published by Guernica Editions in Spring 2021. It documents the settlement history and contributions of Italian immigrants who worked on the railways\, in the coal mines of Alberta and BC\, homesteaded and also set up a range of small and large businesses. She gives Italian immigrants their rightful place in the narrative of province and nation building. \nShe has contributed entries to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for psychiatrist Charles Arthur Baragar\, horticulturist George Harcourt\, and city planner and administrator Christopher James Yorath. \nFor nearly 30 years she has worked in the museum sector in Alberta (including as Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association) and is well-known for advocacy on behalf of the sector. Dr. Davies has served on various cultural advisory committees adjudicating grants and making policy decisions including the Canada-France Cultural Accord. As a member of the Canadian Heritage Information Network Advisory Committee\, she took part in the Museums and the Web initiative that resulted in the creation of the Virtual Museum of Canada. In addition\, she was a member of the committee that helped develop Canadian policies on the digital heritage for UNESCO. \nDr. Davies served on the Government of Canada’s Cultural Sector Initiative that examined the health of the voluntary sector. She co-chaired the Research Steering Committee\, Capacity Joint Table\, responsible for designing the first-ever National Survey of Non-Profit and Voluntary Organizations as well as the benchmarking study on charities in 40 countries done by Johns Hopkins University for UNESCO. \nShe has undertaken a range of curatorial work including obtaining loans from French and British museum collections for the millennium exhibit Anno Domini: Jesus through the Centuries at the Royal Alberta Museum. This lecture is made possible by a grant from The Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund. \nBorn in 1953 in Kingston\, ON\, to Ukrainian displaced persons parents\, he came of age at a time when Ukrainian Canadians were clamouring for a free and independent Ukraine. While the land of his parents has always held a cherished place in his heart\, It was while In university that a young Luciuk\, himself a product of the Third Wave\, met a man of the First\, who told him he was interned at Fort Henry during the First World War. DESCRIPTION:The Canmore Museum invites you to join authors Stephen Legault and Angie Abdou for an engaging discussion of Legault’s 2020 book Taking a Break from Saving the World through this live-streamed event. Registrants will receive their Zoom invitation to the event within 24 hours after registering. \nThe event will be live-streamed at 7:00 pm on Saturday\, September 19\, 2020 and will feature a live question and answer session following the discussion.\nYou can purchase your copy of Taking a Break from Saving the World through the museum’s online bookstore.\n\nStephen Legault\, Author | The photo-essay book Where Rivers Meet: Photographs and Stories from the Bow Valley and Kananaskis (2019)\, edited by Legault\, will be the featured book for the Canmore Museum’s online book club this December. Stephen has been writing since 1988\, and for nearly as long has been leading national and international conservation programs and organizations. He recently served as program director for the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y). His next photo-essay book\, The Waters Within: Photographs and Stories from Waterton Lakes and the Castle Wildland will be released in 2021.\n\nAngie Abdou\, Host | Chatelaine magazine named Angie’s most recent novel\, In Case I Go\, one of the most-riveting mysteries of 2017\, and The Vancouver Sun called it a “spectacularly successful” novel. It was a finalist for the Banff Mountain Book Award\, in the fiction and poetry category. \nWith her seventh book\, Abdou turns her attention to nonfiction. Home Ice: Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom chronicles the year in the life of a busy sport family. A starred review in Booklist calls Home Ice a first-rate memoir\, a fine example of narrative nonfiction\, and a must-read for parents with youngsters in organized sport. \nAngie is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Athabasca University.\n\nRegister Today!

DESCRIPTION:With the gardens in full bloom and summer finally making an appearance\, it is time to celebrate the summer season properly. The NWMP Barracks Provincial Historic Site is delighted to announce the return of a popular summer program this year on Sunday afternoons in August from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. \nArt in the Park: Sunday Social is our nod to past traditions of gathering up the entire family and bringing them to the mountains for fresh air\, picnics\, and impromptu socials. With the amazing work our volunteers have put into the gardens and grounds at the NWMP Barracks\, a Sunday Social seemed the perfect excuse to invite our friends to come round. \nIf the picturesque setting of the NWMP Barracks was not enough of a draw\, local musicians will play between 1:30pm and 3:30pm. You can expect to see musicians delivering everything from classical to jazz standard to world music while guests relax next to our amazing gardens. You can also sip from another stream of creativity while on site as we will be working with local artists and artisans to host demonstrations and “live art” while offering their pieces and products for purchase. \nMUSIC | Heather Jean Jordan \nHeather Jean Jordan is a professional Singer-Songwriter and Educator based in Banff\, Alberta. Growing up on a farm in rural Manitoba she fell in love with the magic of communal music-making and the majesty of nature. A Classically-Trained Singer & Pianist\, and Self-Taught Ukulele Player\, who loves to write\, perform and share the joy of music with all ages\, she’s been touring\, performing and teaching locally and across the prairies for the past decade. \nA firm believer in music as a natural healing instinct\, wherever the music leads\, Heather Jean follows. Genre hopping from Folk to Opera to Children’s Music\, or wherever the moment demands\, she is inexorably drawn to those perfectly human moments of togetherness\, and a sucker for a good story and a foot-tapping tune. Her intention in any performance is always to create a connection and break through the shell- be it through laughter\, tears\, or a good old fashioned happy dance. The hope being that we all come away feeling a little more hopeful\, and a lot less alone. \nARTISTS | Dana Roman and Isabelle Guilmette \nDana Roman | Since moving to small town in Canadian Rockies in 1997\, Dana became a studio artist and now works in mixed media and textiles. She won awards for her art locally\, nationally and internationally.Dana was trained as an architect and worked for 10 years in architectural firms\, before she decided to switch to art. For the next 20 years Dana was painting\, designing and manufacturing textile art pieces and artwear made of her painted silks. She wholesaled her production and one of a kind pieces through her Toronto based business Artacious. Dana’s latest pieces use upcycled\, eco-dyed\, hand made\, and painted fabrics. Dana finds inspiration for her art while hiking in the backcountry\, scrambling the mountain. \nIsabelle Guilmette | It is in the spring of 2016 that Isabelle developed a passion for Soap Making. Developing recipes with different oils and natural exfoliants was just the beginning of her creating self care products. She will be joining us to share her love of natural exfoliants and oils and the process to which she is crafting them. \nTo protect the health of our guests\, a number of measures will be in place during the Art In the Park event\, including capacity management on the grounds\, a 6 foot distance between artists\, and hand sanitizer at the entrance and at each artist tent. Visitors are highly encouraged\, though not mandated\, to wear masks.
