Mercedes Cormier\, our Collections Officer will guide a discussion about what items the Museum will accept into our collection. What information does the Museum need to accompany the donated item and why do we need this information? Also\, to make the event more interactive\, we ask that each participant bring with them to the talk\, one small item that you think the museum might be interested in because of its connection to your life here in Canmore or the Bow Valley. The item should have a story that you would be willing to share with the group. This is always a popular event.\n(Please note: the museum will not be accepting any donations to our collection at this event) \nSpace is limited to 15 people. Register Early for this event. \nThis is one of the many events happening during Seniors’ Week. Seniors’ Week is organized by the Town of Canmore. \n \n

From the artists who traveled in the early days of the Canadian Pacific Railway to the professionals and students at the Banff School of Fine Arts who flocked in the 1940s to paint the industrial communities to the hippie generation who made the region their creative home\, much has transpired artistically. In addition\, inspiring moments from the artists and makers of the nearby Îyârhe Nakoda. \nTicket includes admission to the Canmore Museum. \nABOUT MARY-BETH LAVIOLETTE \nMary-Beth Laviolette\, Associate Curator of Art  \nMary-Beth Laviolette is an avid hiker and independent art writer and curator based in Canmore\, Alberta\, who specializes in Albertan and Western Canadian art. She is the author of A Delicate Art: Artists\, Wildflowers and Native Plants of the West and An Alberta Art Chronicle: Adventures in Recent & Contemporary Art\, 1970–2000\, and co-author of Alberta Art & Artists: A Survey. Recent exhibitions she has curated include Reckonings: Michael Cameron & Karen Maiolo (Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies\, Banff); Pulse: Alberta Society of Artists at 80 Years (Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts\, Calgary) and Alberta Mistresses of the Modern: 1935 to 1975 (Art Gallery of Alberta\, Edmonton). Mary-Beth is also a public speaker and enjoys engaging with the public about art whenever and wherever possible. With the Canmore Museum\, she has served as our Associate Curator of Art from 2021 to present.

SUMMARY:MINING AND GEOLOGY WALK
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the rugged beauty of Canmore’s mountainous landscape came to be\, or how the landscape has shaped the town? Get to know the science behind the area where we live and play a little better with geologist Percy Strong. \nOur geology and mining walking tour will give insight into the geology of our rugged Rocky Mountains and explore the geology and history of the Canmore No. 1 and No. 2 coal mines. \nThe tour is 3 hours in length; tour participants will first meet at the Canmore Museum. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and wear layered summer walking clothes. Bottled water will be supplied.  Carpooling will be required. \nHosted as part of the museum’s ongoing exhibit\, Survival In Paradise: Coal Mining in the Bow Valley. \nABOUT OUR GUIDE \nPercy Strong is a retired geoscientist\, an avid rockhound\, hiker and snowshoer. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours\, Geology) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador\, and a Master of Science (specializing in sedimentology) from McMaster University. \nDespite that he still considers himself a student of the Bow Valley and keen on learning about the rock outcrops and glacial deposits found there. He has worked with major and junior oil companies in the petroleum industry\, run his own geological consulting company and finished his 36-year career as the Chief Geologist for the petroleum division of a major gold mining company. Percy is also keen photographer\, reader and has an interest in creative writing.

SUMMARY:ALONG THE BOW ARTIST WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join popular Canmore artist and instructor Patti Dyment in nature’s own painting classroom\, the great outdoors! You will learn about equipping yourself for painting outdoors\, composing in the landscape\, and using a limited palette for easier colour mixing and harmony.  A box lunch is included with the workshop\, and a supplies list will be sent by the instructor ahead of the workshop. A wet-weather indoor alternative will be available. \nFor this workshop\, the class will be painting Canmore’s iconic Three Sisters mountains.  \nThis plein-air painting workshop is being hosted in conjunction with the Canmore Museums summer exhibition\, Along The Bow: The Art Of This Place curated by Mary-Beth Laviolette. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nPatti is a popular instructor of painting classes and workshops. She achieved Federation of Canadian Artists signature status in 2011. Patti has been exhibiting in commercial and public galleries in Western Canada since 1988 and had one exhibition in Japan. She has been an artist-in-residence at Brewster Columbia Icefields; Numtijah Lodge\, Bow Lake\, AB; Alpine Club of Canada Artist Retreat\, Yoho National Park; and the Alpine Club of Canada General Mountaineering Camp\, Artist Week.

SUMMARY:DOWNTOWN CANMORE HERITAGE WALK
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed due to reaching max capacity of participants. Join us for our next one on September 9th! \nCanmore has changed a great deal since it was founded in 1883\, evolving from a gritty railway depot to a coal mining town and then finally to an international resort destination. As a center first for the railroad and the industry\, Canmore was a place where you played hard and worked hard. Like many mining towns in southern Alberta and southeastern BC\, the community was faced with many economic ups and downs. \nOver the past century\, its history as a coal mining community has included boom-town architecture\, interesting characters\, exciting events\, and mine disasters. With the closure of the mine in 1979 and Canmore serving as a host community for the 1988 Winter Olympics\, the community has continued to evolve. Today\, it could be argued that as a resort community\, we play harder than we work as we enjoy the incredible mountain vistas and recreational amenities that Canmore offers today. \nWe invite you to experience our rich and colourful past by exploring Canmore’s built heritage and tracing the continued evolution of our community. Our Historical Downtown Walking Tour will take you to 10 places located within a 2 km radius of the Canmore Museum\, each with its own story to tell as part of the cultural and heritage mosaic of Canmore. The tour will start and end at the Canmore Museum. \nHosted in conjunction with Historic Calgary Week 2023.  This event is free for Museum members and the public; Museum members can book tickets online beginning April 1\, the general public can book tickets beginning April 25. \nABOUT YOUR GUIDE \nRob Alexander is a journalist\, author\, photographer\, and historian. He grew up in Canmore\, steeped in the history of the Canadian West and the sights and sounds of a coal mining town. With an affinity for ruins and abandoned sites\, he gravitated towards story and sense of place\, leading him to explore and share the history and heritage of the Bow Valley\, Alberta\, and Western Canada. He is a former reporter for the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper (still a freelancer though)\, author of The History of Canmore\, published in 2010 by Summerthought Publishing of Banff. Rob lives in Calgary where he works as the digitization specialist for Libraries and Cultural resources at the University of Calgary.

In addition\, inspiring moments from the artists and makers of the nearby Îyârhe Nakoda. \nABOUT MARY-BETH LAVIOLETTE \nMary-Beth Laviolette\, Associate Curator of Art  \nMary-Beth Laviolette is an avid hiker and independent art writer and curator based in Canmore\, Alberta\, who specializes in Albertan and Western Canadian art. She is the author of A Delicate Art: Artists\, Wildflowers and Native Plants of the West and An Alberta Art Chronicle: Adventures in Recent & Contemporary Art\, 1970–2000\, and co-author of Alberta Art & Artists: A Survey. Recent exhibitions she has curated include Reckonings: Michael Cameron & Karen Maiolo (Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies\, Banff); Pulse: Alberta Society of Artists at 80 Years (Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts\, Calgary) and Alberta Mistresses of the Modern: 1935 to 1975 (Art Gallery of Alberta\, Edmonton). Mary-Beth is also a public speaker and enjoys engaging with the public about art whenever and wherever possible. With the Canmore Museum\, she has served as our Associate Curator of Art from 2021 to present.

Get to know the science behind the area where we live and play a little better with geologist Percy Strong.\nOur geology and mining walking tour will give insight into the geology of our rugged Rocky Mountains and explore the geology and history of the Canmore No. 1 and No. 2 coal mines. \nThe tour is 3 hours in length; tour participants will first meet at the Canmore Museum. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and wear layered summer walking clothes. Bottled water will be supplied.  Carpooling will be required. \nHosted as part of the museum’s ongoing exhibit\, Survival In Paradise: Coal Mining in the Bow Valley. \nABOUT OUR GUIDE \nPercy Strong is a retired geoscientist\, an avid rockhound\, hiker and snowshoer. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours\, Geology) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador\, and a Master of Science (specializing in sedimentology) from McMaster University. \nDespite that he still considers himself a student of the Bow Valley and keen on learning about the rock outcrops and glacial deposits found there. He has worked with major and junior oil companies in the petroleum industry\, run his own geological consulting company and finished his 36-year career as the Chief Geologist for the petroleum division of a major gold mining company. Percy is also keen photographer\, reader and has an interest in creative writing.

Beer and other refreshments will be served. \nRegistration is highly recommended. \nABOUT YOUR ENTERTAINER\n \nCharlie B. delivers his smoldering version of the Blues in a polished\, high-energy package that unfailingly pull audiences to their feet. Known for his skillful guitar work and rich baritone voice\, deep grooves\, vocal artistry\, masterful musicianship\, and heartfelt messages of love and loss are all his signature. Decades of experience and thousands of miles traveled combine to make Charlie B an in-demand act. \nCharlie grew up in a musical household. His mother sang in the church and would fill the house with Big Mama Thornton and Bessie Smith records. But his Beethoven-loving father preferred young Charlie play classical music. So at eight years old\, he was given a violin. \n“He loved violin music and I hated it\,” says Butler with a laugh. “But I practiced day-in and day-out\, only because if I didn’t practice I didn’t eat.”\nHis mother finally convinced his father to let him trade the violin in for a guitar a few years later\, which he would eventually put to good use performing at family gatherings or neighbourhood parties and BBQs for nickels. \nIt certainly helped prepare him for a life in the blues\, as did having a bit of a nomadic childhood. Butler’s father was a military attaché for the U.S. State Department\, which meant he grew up all over the world. He graduated high school in Stuttgart\, Germany. \nAfter his own stint in the military\, Butler moved to New York where he became a fixture in the East Village’s blues and jazz scenes. He moved to Montreal in the ’70s and Calgary in the ’80s. DESCRIPTION:Canmore has changed a great deal since it was founded in 1883\, evolving from a gritty railway depot to a coal mining town and then finally to an international resort destination. As a center first for the railroad and the industry\, Canmore was a place where you played hard and worked hard. Like many mining towns in southern Alberta and southeastern BC\, the community was faced with many economic ups and downs. \nOver the past century\, its history as a coal mining community has included boom-town architecture\, interesting characters\, exciting events\, and mine disasters. With the closure of the mine in 1979 and Canmore serving as a host community for the 1988 Winter Olympics\, the community has continued to evolve. Today\, it could be argued that as a resort community\, we play harder than we work as we enjoy the incredible mountain vistas and recreational amenities that Canmore offers today. \nWe invite you to experience our rich and colourful past by exploring Canmore’s built heritage and tracing the continued evolution of our community. Our Historical Downtown Walking Tour will take you to 10 places located within a 2 km radius of the Canmore Museum\, each with its own story to tell as part of the cultural and heritage mosaic of Canmore. The tour will start and end at the Canmore Museum. \nABOUT YOUR GUIDE \nRob Alexander is a journalist\, author\, photographer\, and historian. He grew up in Canmore\, steeped in the history of the Canadian West and the sights and sounds of a coal mining town. With an affinity for ruins and abandoned sites\, he gravitated towards story and sense of place\, leading him to explore and share the history and heritage of the Bow Valley\, Alberta\, and Western Canada. He is a former reporter for the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper (still a freelancer though)\, author of The History of Canmore\, published in 2010 by Summerthought Publishing of Banff. Rob lives in Calgary where he works as the digitization specialist for Libraries and Cultural resources at the University of Calgary.

DESCRIPTION:The Canmore Dixieland Jazz Band will be performing in the Civic Centre courtyard on Saturday\, September 9th!  \nABOUT YOUR PERFORMERS \nThe Canmore Dixieland Jazz Band is a delightful local jazz ensemble comprised of nine talented musicians. \nInformally established around 2015\, the band originated when several musicians from Canmore gathered in Stan Horner’s garage\, with Stan being the drummer\, and began playing Dixieland tunes. Drawing inspiration from the early 20th-century style of jazz that emerged in New Orleans and the American South\, known as Dixieland or Traditional Jazz\, their music blends influences from ragtime\, blues\, brass band music\, and other traditional African American musical forms. \nThe band’s vibrant sound comes alive with energizing vocals and a front-line of instruments\, including trumpet\, trombone\, clarinet\, and saxophone\, accompanied by a rhythm section of banjo\, piano\, tuba and drums. \nThe band members\, each contributing their unique talents\, are Bob Bean on clarinet\, Doon Wilkins as the vocalist\, Heather Reese on banjo\, Lee Post on clarinet\, Robert Hudson playing the tuba\, Russ Peardon on trombone\, Thomas Krause handling the trumpet\, Wayne Schneider on saxophone\, and Yun-Chu Wu on piano. \nDespite their success\, the band remains a “not-for-profit” group\, driven by the pure joy of making music and spreading happiness. SUMMARY:MINING AND GEOLOGY WALK
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the rugged beauty of Canmore’s mountainous landscape came to be\, or how the landscape has shaped the town? Get to know the science behind the area where we live and play a little better with geologist Percy Strong. \nOur geology and mining walking tour will give insight into the geology of our rugged Rocky Mountains and explore the geology and history of the Canmore No. 1 and No. 2 coal mines. \nThe tour is 3 hours in length; tour participants will first meet at the Canmore Museum. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and wear layered summer walking clothes. Bottled water will be supplied.  Carpooling will be required. \nHosted as part of the museum’s ongoing exhibit\, Survival In Paradise: Coal Mining in the Bow Valley. \nABOUT YOUR GUIDE \nPercy Strong is a retired geoscientist\, an avid rockhound\, hiker and snowshoer. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours\, Geology) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador\, and a Master of Science (specializing in sedimentology) from McMaster University. \nDespite that he still considers himself a student of the Bow Valley and keen on learning about the rock outcrops and glacial deposits found there. He has worked with major and junior oil companies in the petroleum industry\, run his own geological consulting company and finished his 36-year career as the Chief Geologist for the petroleum division of a major gold mining company. Percy is also keen photographer\, reader and has an interest in creative writing.

September 10. \nJoin Mary-Beth Laviolette\, in a 40-minute tour of Along the Bow: Art of This Place. From Canmore to Mînî Thnî (previously Morley)\, highlights from over a 125 years of painting\, photography\, video and fine craft in the rugged eastern Bow Valley. From the artists who traveled in the early days of the Canadian Pacific Railway to the professionals and students at the Banff School of Fine Arts who flocked in the 1940s to paint the industrial communities to the hippie generation who made the region their creative home\, much has transpired artistically. In addition\, inspiring moments from the artists and makers of the nearby Îyârhe Nakoda. \nABOUT YOUR GUIDE \n \nMary-Beth Laviolette is an avid hiker and independent art writer and curator based in Canmore\, Alberta\, who specializes in Albertan and Western Canadian art. She is the author of A Delicate Art: Artists\, Wildflowers and Native Plants of the West and An Alberta Art Chronicle: Adventures in Recent & Contemporary Art\, 1970–2000\, and co-author of Alberta Art & Artists: A Survey. Recent exhibitions she has curated include Reckonings: Michael Cameron & Karen Maiolo (Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies\, Banff); Pulse: Alberta Society of Artists at 80 Years (Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts\, Calgary) and Alberta Mistresses of the Modern: 1935 to 1975 (Art Gallery of Alberta\, Edmonton). Mary-Beth is also a public speaker and enjoys engaging with the public about art whenever and wherever possible. With the Canmore Museum\, she has served as our Associate Curator of Art from 2021 to present.

DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to join us as we celebrate the opening of our new exhibit\, Wagichibi Îhnuthe: The Dance Regalia of the Îyârhe Nakoda. This exhibit will trace the journey of the Îyârhe Stoney Nakoda as they reclaim the cultural traditions of dance\, regalia\, and ceremony from the very earliest recorded performance for non-Indigenous guests staying at the Banff Springs Hotel in 1894\, to the rise of Banff Indians Days and the “Indian Encampment” at Calgary Stampede\, to competitive powwows hosted at Morley and Eden Valley today. Featuring regalia and other artifacts on loan to the Canmore Museum from Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda people at neighbouring Mînî Thni (Morley)\, this exhibit is developed in collaboration with members of the Stoney Nakoda Nation. \nThere will be a short introduction to the exhibit at 5:00 pm before opening the doors. SUMMARY:MAKING HER DRESS WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:As the facilitator dresses two life size mannequins with the Nakoda Sioux style traditional dresses\, she integrates storytelling within cultural pedagogy. Workshop themes include historical impacts of settlement\, intergenerational trauma\, language and communication\, beadwork and traditional dress regalia origins\, song and dance\, rites of passage\, addictions\, suicide\, MMIWG\, healthy relationships and parenting\, grief\, trauma and loss\, and wellness. \nParticipants will have a choice of creating miniature dolls or participating in art therapy through the colouring book she has created to accompany the workshop. This workshop won the 2019 Mark Amy Award from Nechi Institute for Excellence in the Trainer of Trainer Program\, where this workshop was further enhanced. This workshop is also being showcased as a Documentary called My Blood Memory is Couture which was completed with a grant by Telus StoryHive along in collaboration with Indicity. This documentary aired fall 2019. \n Hosted as part of Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 25 to 30) \nABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR \nTeresa Snow is a Certified Life Skills Coach and a Certified Trauma Counselor\, who is Nakoda from Morley\, AB. Her two traditional names are: Pretty Eagle Woman and Minithni Wiya(Cold Water Woman) Her scholastic achievements include; Criminology from Mount Royal University\, Women’s Crisis Counseling Certificate (from Portage College)\, Community Addictions Training (CAT)\, Advanced Community Training (ACT) Trainer of Trainer (TOT) (from Nechi Institute)\, Certified Life skills Coach\, Danger Assessment Training\, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training\, Incident Command System Training\, Family Group Conference and many more. As well\, she delivers workshops on Grief and Loss\, Healthy Families and Traditional Parenting. She is a knowledge keeper of traditional teachings as well as an avid seamstress/beadwork artist/presenter. She worked as an off-site contract Trainer for Nechi Institute. She recently received her Level 1 Reiki Training.
