SUMMARY:HISTORIC DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR
DESCRIPTION:Canmore has changed a great deal since it was founded in 1883\, evolving from a gritty railway depot to a coal mining town and then finally to an international resort destination. As a center first for the railroad and the industry\, Canmore was a place where you played hard and worked hard. Like many mining towns in southern Alberta and southeastern BC\, the community was faced with many economic ups and downs. Over the past century\, its history as a coal mining community has included boom-town architecture\, interesting characters\, exciting events\, and mine disasters. With the closure of the mine in 1979 and Canmore serving as a host community for the 1988 Winter Olympics\, the community has continued to evolve. Today\, it could be argued that as a resort community\, we play harder than we work as we enjoy the incredible mountain vistas and recreational amenities that Canmore offers today. \nWe invite you to experience our rich and colourful past by exploring Canmore’s built heritage and tracing the continued evolution of our community. Our Historical Downtown Walking Tour will take you to 10 places located within in 2 km radius of the Canmore Museum\, each with its own story to tell as part of the cultural and heritage mosaic of Canmore. The tour will start and end at the Canmore Museum.\n\n\nABOUT YOUR GUIDE\nRob Alexander is a journalist\, author\, photographer\, and historian. He grew up in Canmore\, steeped in the history of the Canadian West and the sights and sounds of a coal mining town. With an affinity for ruins and abandoned sites\, he gravitated towards story and sense of place\, leading him to explore and share the history and heritage of the Bow Valley\, Alberta\, and Western Canada. He is a former reporter for the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper (still a freelancer though)\, author of The History of Canmore\, published in 2010 by Summerthought Publishing of Banff. Rob lives in Calgary where he works as the digitization specialist for Libraries and Cultural resources at the University of Calgary.

SUMMARY:"THIS OLD BARRACKS" RESTORATION OPEN HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:<h4>The Canmore NWMP Barracks was built in 1893\, making it one of the oldest buildings in the community.  Drop into the Restoration Open House to learn about the restoration of the building firsthand from those involved in the restoration of the building over a six-year period. Examine the volumes of meticulous research that guided the work of over 130 community volunteers\, and hear what some of the learnings were from the project.</h4> \nThe Canmore NWMP Barracks Restoration Project was a true community heritage project.  Vi Sandford\, co-chair of the restoration committee stated to a local news reporter just shortly before the Barracks’ Grand Opening on July 16\, 1995\, “It’s one of those few projects that every segment of the community—from school kids to seniors to the Town Council—has participated in\, and everyone involved has found it rewarding. It’s quite wonderful.“ \nAfter visiting with members of the original restoration team\, head outside to learn from members of our Heritage Garden volunteer team how the grounds are being maintained today\, and to pick up your package of heritage flower seeds. \nLight refreshments will be served throughout the day.

SUMMARY:GROTTO CANYON INDIGENOUS EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a walk with a knowledgeable guide who will share the fascinating stories of Grotto Canyon from an Indigenous perspective. Grotto Canyon has a long and intimate relationship with Indigenous people from this area. There are important landmarks\, signs\, and even message boards left on the land that are read in a unique way by those of us who have learned to understand. \nThough many who have studied the pictographs in the canyon through academia have formed theories on the pictographs. Program participants will have an opportunity to learn from the cultural teachings that give a very different perspective on the canyon\, the pictographs\, the landscape and the other elements that give rise to the story of Grotto Canyon. \nPlease arrive at the Canmore Museum (located at 902B 7th Avenue in downtown Canmore)\, where the tour will begin\, 15 minutes early. From here\, group members will travel on their own to the trail head. This 2.5-hour long hike will be led at a relaxed walking pace and with plenty of stops to learn about Indigenous plant uses. The terrain uses well-established trails; the tour is rated easy.\n\nJordan Ebe is a Metis guide with Mahikan Trails. \nABOUT YOUR GUIDE\nMahikan Trails is an Indigenous eco-tourism company that provides guided walks and workshops operated by Brenda Holder and her son Jordan Ede. \nEde has been giving tours with Mahikan Trails for the past 20 years\, and his connection to the land will be obvious from your first steps onto the trail. He has a story for seemingly every plant we walk past\, from buffaloberries (a key food source for bears\, who will eat as many as 200\,000 per day) to spruce trees (“A pharmacy\, hardware store and grocery store all in one!”). Some of Ede’s knowledge of the Bow Valley comes from his professional life\, but mostly this is information that his family has been using for generations. When Ede woke up in the middle of the night with a painful toothache\, his mom Brenda treated it with the same propolis—a resin-like substance made by bees from poplar buds—that was in turn passed down to her.

Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his crew arrive\, they discover only two people: Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) and his daughter\, Altaira (Anne Francis)\, who was born on the remote planet. Soon\, Adams begins to uncover the mystery of what happened on Altair IV\, and why Morbius and Altaira are the sole survivors. \nGenre: Science Fiction | Release date: March 15\, 1956\nRun time: 1h 38m \nMovie trivia: The Forbidden Planet is based on the play The Tempest by William Shakespear. The famous poster for the film shows a menacing robot carrying a struggling pretty girl – a staple of monster movie posters from the 1950’s; in fact\, no such scene occurs in the film itself. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry has been quoted as saying that this film was a major inspiration for that series. The film was the debut of Leslie Nielson.\n\n\n3:00 PM | FOREVER DARLING\nAfter five years of marriage\, Susan (Lucille Ball) and Lorenzo Vega (Desi Arnaz) have grown apart from each other. Lorenzo is a chemist who has been working long hours on a new insecticide\, making Susan feel neglected. However\, Susan starts seeing her Guardian Angel (James Mason)\, who advises her to try to support her husband. So she agrees to go on a camping trip during which Lorenzo will be testing a new bug formula\, even though Susan knows nothing about surviving outdoors. \nGenre: Comedy\, Fantasy | Release date: 1956\nRun time: 1h 36m \nMovie Trivia: The script had been around for years at MGM. It was originally going to be a movie for William Powell and Myrna Loy. A couple of years later it was planned for Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. However\, both projects fell through and the script was forgotten about. Years later Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz showed interest in making another movie and they picked this script. The film was done at the height of the popularity of the I Love Lucy tv show; filming commenced in mid-June 1955\, while Ball and Arnaz were on hiatus from filming their tv series.

SUMMARY:STORIES OF CANMORE BOOK CLUB | SPIRITS OF THE ROCKIES: REASSERTING AN INDIGENOUS PRESENCE IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary-Beth Laviolette in conversation with author and professor Dr. Courtney Mason of Thompson University (Kamloops\, BC) and Tony Snow\, our Associate Curator of Indigenous Cultural Content\, about the book “Spirits of The Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff National Park”.\nABOUT THE BOOK \nAs we travel along the TransCanada towards the towering terrain of the Rockies\, how many of us are aware this iconic highway cuts right through the Stoney Nakoda reserve? The Banff-Bow Valley is the heart of spiritual and economic life for the Nakoda people. Beginning with the Treaty 7 agreement (1877)\, the Nakoda were displaced from the region by the reserve system and the creation of Canada’s first national park. In Spirits of the Rockies\, Courtney W. Mason explores the history and cultural heritage of the Stoney Nakoda as they reasserted their presence in the 20th century becoming involved in local tourism economies and the Banff Indian Days summer sporting festivals. Based on oral histories with Nakoda Elders and written with the guidance of Nakoda artist and elder activist\, Rolland Rollinmud and Nakoda Nation research director\, Ian A.L. Getty\, the book tackles the publicly little known history of these Indigenous peoples and their relationship with the Banff-Bow Valley. \nPurchase the book through the Canmore Museum Online Shop. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDr. Courtney Mason is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (renewed in 2020) in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities. He is cross appointed between Natural Resource Science and the Tourism Management Department at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia. \nCourtney completed his PhD at the University of Alberta where he investigated the displacement of Indigenous peoples in the formation of Banff National Park.  Along with the history of educational institutions on the Nakoda reserve at Morley\, his dissertation focused on colonial power relations and the experiences of Nakoda peoples in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He worked as a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow with the Indigenous Health Research Group at the University of Ottawa where he contributed to community-based food security and health programs in rural Northern Ontario (Oji-Cree) and the Northwest Territories (Dene and Métis). \nHis current research examines rural and Indigenous land use development with a focus on tourism economies and protected area management. He is also interested in rural food security\, sport fishing tourism\, conservation practices and environmental change. He is the author of Spirits of the Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff National Park (U of Toronto Press\, 2014) and the co-editor of A Land Not Forgotten: Indigenous Food Security and Land-Based Practices in Northern Ontario (U of Manitoba Press\, 2017).  His research program is funded by SSHRC\, CIHR\, the Canadian Mountain Network and BC Parks. He is a SSHRC Leaders representative. \nIn his spare time you will find him fly fishing on local rivers and stillwater\, skiing and hiking with his young family in the Kamloops region and throughout BC.

SUMMARY:MEMBER MONDAY | GARDEN HARVEST
DESCRIPTION:Member Mondays are a fantastic way for Museum members to get acquainted with one another and with the work of the Canmore Museum. We invite members of the community to participate in Member Mondays as a way to learn about how members support the Canmore Museum and the many ways that the museum contributes to the Canmore community.\nMany early Canmore residents used their entire yard for a vegetable garden\, growing what was needed for the year. Then\, as today in our heritage garden\, potatoes\, carrots\, peas\, beans\, beets\, cabbage\, lettuce and tomatoes were grown. \nOn September 19\, members will have the opportunity to learn more about our heritage garden program and help our dedicated group of garden volunteers with harvesting our root vegetable crop for the season. Each year\, the garden’s vegetable yield goes to the Canmore Food Bank\, helping to contribute to food sustainability for vulnerable populations in the Bow Valley; to learn more about how you can support this important organization\, visit www.bowvalleyfoodbank.ca. \nLight refreshments will be served after the harvest is complete in the Barracks. \nNot a member? Consider supporting the Canmore Museum’s work in our local community through a membership. Learn more about the value of a membership and how to purchase a membership online.

SUMMARY:MEMBER MONDAY | UNCOVERING CANMORE'S HERITAGE
DESCRIPTION:Member Mondays are a fantastic way for Museum members to get acquainted with one another and with the work of the Canmore Museum. We invite members of the community to participate in Member Mondays as a way to learn about how members support the Canmore Museum and the many ways that the museum contributes to the Canmore community.\nOn October 17\, join Jeanie Gartley\, the Canmore Museum’s Associate Heritage Planner\, to learn more about the Museum’s Uncovering Canmore’s Heritage project and to help identify the major themes in Canmore’s history from different erra’s of human engagement with the area we know today as Canmore. This projects is building off the provincial heritage building survey completed in 1982 and the updated 2002 heritage survey undertaken by the museum in 2022\, and will determine the scope of Canmore’s heritage that remains in place today\, as well as to identify places of meaning to the Stoney Nakoda and places of interest to Canmore residents today. The project end goal is to support the protection and preservation of Canmore’s heritage\, to map our heritage resources and to tell a fuller stories through the places that have meaning to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Canmore and the Bow Valley today. \nNot a member? Consider supporting the Canmore Museum’s work in our local community through a membership. Learn more about the value of a membership and how to purchase a membership online.
