SUMMARY:STORIES OF CANMORE BOOK CLUB | SPIRITS OF THE ROCKIES: REASSERTING AN INDIGENOUS PRESENCE IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary-Beth Laviolette in conversation with author and professor Dr. Courtney Mason of Thompson University (Kamloops\, BC) and Tony Snow\, our Associate Curator of Indigenous Cultural Content\, about the book “Spirits of The Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff National Park”.\nABOUT THE BOOK \nAs we travel along the TransCanada towards the towering terrain of the Rockies\, how many of us are aware this iconic highway cuts right through the Stoney Nakoda reserve? The Banff-Bow Valley is the heart of spiritual and economic life for the Nakoda people. Beginning with the Treaty 7 agreement (1877)\, the Nakoda were displaced from the region by the reserve system and the creation of Canada’s first national park. In Spirits of the Rockies\, Courtney W. Mason explores the history and cultural heritage of the Stoney Nakoda as they reasserted their presence in the 20th century becoming involved in local tourism economies and the Banff Indian Days summer sporting festivals. Based on oral histories with Nakoda Elders and written with the guidance of Nakoda artist and elder activist\, Rolland Rollinmud and Nakoda Nation research director\, Ian A.L. Getty\, the book tackles the publicly little known history of these Indigenous peoples and their relationship with the Banff-Bow Valley. \nPurchase the book through the Canmore Museum Online Shop. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDr. Courtney Mason is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (renewed in 2020) in Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities. He is cross appointed between Natural Resource Science and the Tourism Management Department at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia. \nCourtney completed his PhD at the University of Alberta where he investigated the displacement of Indigenous peoples in the formation of Banff National Park.  Along with the history of educational institutions on the Nakoda reserve at Morley\, his dissertation focused on colonial power relations and the experiences of Nakoda peoples in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He worked as a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow with the Indigenous Health Research Group at the University of Ottawa where he contributed to community-based food security and health programs in rural Northern Ontario (Oji-Cree) and the Northwest Territories (Dene and Métis). \nHis current research examines rural and Indigenous land use development with a focus on tourism economies and protected area management. He is also interested in rural food security\, sport fishing tourism\, conservation practices and environmental change. He is the author of Spirits of the Rockies: Reasserting an Indigenous Presence in Banff National Park (U of Toronto Press\, 2014) and the co-editor of A Land Not Forgotten: Indigenous Food Security and Land-Based Practices in Northern Ontario (U of Manitoba Press\, 2017).  His research program is funded by SSHRC\, CIHR\, the Canadian Mountain Network and BC Parks. He is a SSHRC Leaders representative. \nIn his spare time you will find him fly fishing on local rivers and stillwater\, skiing and hiking with his young family in the Kamloops region and throughout BC.

SUMMARY:STONEY NAKODA STORYTIME
DESCRIPTION:Join Trudy Wesley\, author Ne Îethka Makochî Chach\, This is Our Home\, and Natasha Wesley\, author of Îethkaîhâ Yawabi\, Counting in Stoney\, for a reading of their two books followed by an animal craft activity and an animal friendship dance. Light refreshments will be served following the activity.\nIndigenous languages have long been underrepresented in literature — especially in children’s books. As part of the Canmore Museum’s commitment to give space for members of our neighbouring Stoney Nakoda community in Morely to share their language and culture\, we are pleased to present Stoney Nakoda Storytime. This event is being hosted by the Canmore Museum in conjunction with Alberta Culture Days and artsPlace’s Festival of Art and Creativity. \nThis is a free event\, but space is limited to 30 children; pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Walk-in registration may be accomodated. \nABOUT THE BOOKS AND AUTHORS \n \nWant to learn more about the land we live on here in Treaty 7 territory? This story by Trudy Wesley explains all about the people and animals who live in the foothills and mountains of southern Alberta. “Ne Îethka Makochî Chach (This is Our Home)” is written and read by Trudy Wesley\, Mînî Thnî (Cold Water). The book is illustrated by Tanisha Wesley\, and translated by Duane Mark in the Îethka language of the Stoney Nakoda People. \nAuthor Trudy Westley is author of Ne Îethka Makochî Chach\, This is Our Home. She is the sixth generation of the hereditary holy medicine man\, Chief Hector Crawler. \n \nWith this Stoney Nakoda story\, readers can learn the Îethkaîhâ way of counting accompanied by beautiful Indigenous imagery. Author Natasha Wesley and her artist sister\, Tanisha Wesley\, portray the numbers 1 to 20 through their familiar ways of life beautifully. \nAuthor Natasha Wesley is author of Îethkaîhâ Yawabi\, Counting in Stoney. In the Stoney language\, her name Îyarhe Wiyapta means Shining Mountains. Illustrations in the book are by Tanisha Wesley.

SUMMARY:MEMBER MONDAY | GARDEN HARVEST
DESCRIPTION:Member Mondays are a fantastic way for Museum members to get acquainted with one another and with the work of the Canmore Museum. We invite members of the community to participate in Member Mondays as a way to learn about how members support the Canmore Museum and the many ways that the museum contributes to the Canmore community.\nMany early Canmore residents used their entire yard for a vegetable garden\, growing what was needed for the year. Then\, as today in our heritage garden\, potatoes\, carrots\, peas\, beans\, beets\, cabbage\, lettuce and tomatoes were grown. \nOn September 19\, members will have the opportunity to learn more about our heritage garden program and help our dedicated group of garden volunteers with harvesting our root vegetable crop for the season. Each year\, the garden’s vegetable yield goes to the Canmore Food Bank\, helping to contribute to food sustainability for vulnerable populations in the Bow Valley; to learn more about how you can support this important organization\, visit www.bowvalleyfoodbank.ca. \nLight refreshments will be served after the harvest is complete in the Barracks. \nNot a member? Consider supporting the Canmore Museum’s work in our local community through a membership. Learn more about the value of a membership and how to purchase a membership online.

This projects is building off the provincial heritage building survey completed in 1982 and the updated 2002 heritage survey undertaken by the museum in 2022\, and will determine the scope of Canmore’s heritage that remains in place today\, as well as to identify places of meaning to the Stoney Nakoda and places of interest to Canmore residents today. The project end goal is to support the protection and preservation of Canmore’s heritage\, to map our heritage resources and to tell a fuller stories through the places that have meaning to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Canmore and the Bow Valley today. \nNot a member? Consider supporting the Canmore Museum’s work in our local community through a membership. Learn more about the value of a membership and how to purchase a membership online.

SUMMARY:UNCOVERING CANMORE'S HERITAGE PROJECT - OPEN HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, the Canmore Museum embarked on the first phase of a three-phase heritage project called “Uncovering Canmore’s Heritage”. In the first phase\, a context paper will be written that explores the social\, economic and architectural history of Canmore across historical eras. Phase I also identifies places of historical value to the Canmore community. \nWe invite you to join heritage planner and project consultant\, Jeanie Gartly\, on February 9 at 7:00 pm to learn more about the project and review whether the major historical themes\, eras of development\, and places of interest identified to date are correct and determine what other places need to be added to the places of interest list. \nLight refreshments will be served. The event is free to attend. \nPhase II focuses more on the significance of the area known as Chuwapchipchiyan Kudi Bi to the Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda\, including place names\, places of archeological significance\, and places of cultural and historical interest. Phase III is the development of the Canmore Heritage Strategy and Heritage Program.

SUMMARY:NOVEL IDEAS BOOK TALK | MARY GRAHAM
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Canmore-based Creative Director and Cultural Amplifier Bridget Ryan\, Novel Ideas brings people together to explore ideas and perspectives related to Canmore culture\, history\, place\, and identity with local authors\, spoken word artists\, historians\, and musicians.\nAs part of our Family Day Big Weekend events\, host Bridget Ryan welcomes musician Phillip Alexander Nugent\, John Snow\, and author Mary Graham to the Canmore Museum. Bridget and Mary Graham will discuss her new book\, A Stunning Backdrop: Alberta in the Movies\, 1917 – 1960\, which tells of the unconventional\, untold story of Alberta’s film history\, defined by the terrible beauty of its pristine landscape\, surprisingly important to Hollywood\, and recaptured in lost or ignored Indigenous perspectives and stories. Stories of the Stoney Nakoda First Nations’ near 100-year history in movies will be highlighted by Stoney Nakoda guest John Snow. A book signing will follow. \nDoors open at 6:45 pm\, with live music by Phil Nugent from 7:00 to 7:30 pm\, followed by a book talk from 7:30 to 8:10 pm with an opportunity for audience questions and discussion afterward. Refreshments and appetizers catered by our Canmore culinary team of Chef Dallas Suttie and Chef Darcy Price will be available throughout the evening. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nAlberta’s magnificent landscape has served as a popular location for filmmakers since the dawn of the movie industry. For film pioneers\, Alberta embodied the myth of the Great Northwest\, a primeval mountain wilderness and the last western frontier. In turn\, Canadian entrepreneurs were eager for American studios to drape the Alberta landscape across the backdrop of their movies\, an advertisement without equal. \nA Stunning Backdrop is the untold story of six rollicking decades of filmmaking in Alberta. Mary Graham draws on twelve years of exhaustive research to reveal a film history like no other\, illuminating the deep importance of the province to Hollywood. She explores the often friendly partnerships between American filmmakers and Indigenous communities\, particularly the Stoney Nakoda\, that provided economic opportunities and\, in many cases\, allowed them to retain religious and cultural practices banned by the Canadian government. \nBeautifully illustrated with archival photography and featuring century-old set stills alongside photographs of the locations as they appear today\, by Jean Becq\, Solomon Chiniquay\, Jeff Wallace\, George Webber\, and Paul Zizka\, A Stunning Backdrop is the fascinating\, often surprising\, always unconventional story of film in a province whose rugged\, compelling\, multifarious\, terribly beautiful landscape continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences around the world.\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMary Graham is a writer\, documentary journalist\, and film historian. She has appeared as a feature film specialist at CBC Radio and ARTE\, the European Culture Channel. She presents frequently about her ongoing work on the importance of Indigenous contributions to Alberta film history in the media\, and at universities\, museums\, and other public venues.\nABOUT THE MUSICIAN \n \nThe seeds of Phill Nugent’s folk-rock sound – sometimes whimsical and sometimes gritty – took root in the northern Canadian wilderness where he was raised. The Yukon-born artist’s background in musical theatre (he first took to the stage at age 5) later evolved into songwriting and self-taught guitar. The juxtapositions that inspire Phill’s songs\, like the comfort of family and the freedom of travel\, or the solitude of nature and connection with an audience\, weave rich storylines into his lyrics. Many of the songs on his first studio EP\, self-titled Phillip Alexander Nugent and released in the fall 2019\, are inspired by his wife Michelle and his sons Miles and Beck.\nABOUT YOUR HOST \nSince 2018\, Bridget has called the Bow Valley home\, where she and Jason Carter own and operate The Carter-Ryan Gallery & Live Art Venue; a gallery by day featuring the amazing work of Indigenous artist Jason Carter. But by night\, you guessed it! Wonderful cabaret fills the walls of the gallery with song and story and yes\, there is even dancing allowed!! After 16 years hosting a morning show on television\, a published author of 5 children’s books\, numerous accolades and awards for various MC/Hosting and charitable events\, she finds herself EXACTLY where she hopes to be – bringing so much insight\, fun and laughter to those who join the Canmore Museum’s Novel Ideas events!
