DESCRIPTION:Join our panel of internationally-recognized cultural sector thought leaders as we explore the evolving role of community museums. As social and cultural agencies\, museums can help foster healthier\, more inclusive\, sustainable and connected communities. Our panelists will give insight into how museums are working with their local communities to address some of the most important issues of our time as we look to emerge from a global health and economic crisis. \nEach guest will introduce their topic before event participants break out into 30-minute long break-out rooms of their topic choice. Gail is Co-founder and President of Lord Cultural Resources. Along with many leading publications. she has also co-authored with Ngaire Blankenberg the book Cities\, Museums and Soft Power. Gail has led cultural and tourism plans for cities as well as planning\, management and exhibition assignments for museums\, galleries and cities throughout Canada\, the United States\, the United Kingdom\, continental Europe\, North America and Asia. In 2014\, Gail was appointed Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Minister of Culture of France. More recently\, Gail Lord was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. \nShivani Saini\, Atelier Culturati | Museums + Empowering Inclusivity. Doug has been a museologist since 1980 and a ‘culture and sustainability specialist’ since 1997. He is co-founder of WorldViews Consulting which provides advice and support to a wide range of organizations that are interested in sustainability. Over the past three decades\, Doug has published and spoken widely\, in Canada and internationally\, on topics of museum audience\, creativity\, education and the relationship of culture to sustainability. For almost 20 years\, Doug’s special research and publishing focus has been on understanding and promoting the notion of a ‘culture of sustainability’. He is a founding member of the Canadian Working Group on Museums and Sustainable Communities and a recipient of a Senior Research Fellowship from the Canadian Museums Association. \nMaddie Taylor\, Cuseum | Museums + Creating Digital Communities. Maddie leads content and marketing at Cuseum\, a platform that helps museums and cultural organizations engage their visitors\, members\, and patrons using the power of technology. This book brings to life the untold story of Italian immigrants in Alberta from the 1880s to the present. It places them in the narrative of province building from work on railways\, mines and other industries to breaking the land for agriculture. Oral history excerpts allow the men\, women and children to speak for themselves. What emerges is an unquenchable desire to make good\, and overcome intolerable working conditions and discrimination\, which culminated with enemy alien designation and internment during the Second World War. The book also provides an exploration of the impact of Government of Canada’s multicultural policy on the process of assimilation for the post-war influx of immigrants. It offers a prototype of an immigrant community’s movement from marginalization to the mainstream. \nThroughout April we will be joined by Dr. Davies for deep dives into the research process and coal mining.

Mining played a crucial role in the development of Canmore and therefore a deep dive into Alberta mining will give us insight into the formation of our own community. \nADRIANA (ALBI) DAVIES is a well-known researcher\, writer\, editor and poet. She was the Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association for thirteen years and Executive Director of the Heritage Community Foundation for ten years. Under her leadership\, the Foundation created the Alberta Online Encyclopedia comprising 84 multi-media websites\, which were gifted to the University of Alberta in 2009. She is the author of From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (2014\, University of Calgary Press) and co-editor of The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (to be published by the University of Calgary Press in 2016). Dr. Davies was invested in the Order of Canada\, in 2010 for her contributions to heritage. In 2015\, she was awarded a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) by the Government of Italy for her contributions to the preservation of the Italian language and culture\, and her research and publications on Italian immigration to Canada.

DESCRIPTION:Bernadette McDonald is an important figure in the Canmore/Banff area and well known throughout the world for her contributions to mountain and climbing literature and history. \nHer newest book\, Winter 8000: Climbing the World’s Highest Mountains in the Coldest Season\, again delves into the bravery\, obsessions\, joys\, and tragedies of this special breed of people who live for mountain pursuits. \nJoin author\, Associate Professor\, and CBC personality Angie Abdou for a discussion with Bernadette about her research into climbing culture\, what draws her to these mountaineering stories\, what she has learned about obsession\, suffering\, and risk\, and what compels people to engage in these uncomfortable and dangerous activities. \nEVENT HOST\nAngie Abdou has written six books and co-edited Writing the Body in Motion\, a collection of essays on Canadian Sport Literature. This book looks at Alberta’s complicated history with conservation and the environment. To continue our discussion we will deep dive into environmental concerns specific to the Bow Valley with a focus on ways residents can act to mitigate the effects of Climate Change. \nOUR GUEST\nWe will be joined by Jodi Conuel the Program Coordinator at Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley. At the Biosphere Institute she leads the Shift Program. In this role\, she uses a variety of community engagement tools to empower Bow Valley residents to take meaningful action on climate change. Her responsibilities span from evaluation of local renewable energy potential\, to organization of participatory workshops\, to authoring a monthly newsletter with tips about how to reduce your carbon footprint. Jodi is motivated by a long-standing interest in climate change issues\, sustainable living and human-wildlife conflict resolution.\nPrior to joining the Biosphere Institute\, Jodi’s career focused on human-wildlife conflict\, mitigating the environmental impacts of development projects\, and habitat enhancement. Jodi has also worked in education\, providing onsite wildlife education and supporting science and technology departments within schools. She has several years of experience working in management in both the environmental and hospitality sectors.

If so\, please join us for our Stories of Canmore: Topic Deep Dives where guest speakers will add different perspectives to the themes brought up in our monthly book choice. \nOur book for our January book club meeting is Park Prisoners: The Untold story of Western Canada’s National Parks by author Bill Waiser\, and so for our deep dives we will be having different experts on Internment in the Bow Valley present to us. \nWe continue our deep dive into Internment Camps in Alberta with a lecture and Q&A with Dr. Adriana Davies. Adriana will share stories of Italian Internees in World War II\, reading from her own book From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History and sharing letters and journals from Internees. \nDr. Adriana Davies  \nAdriana (Albi) Davies was born in Grimaldi\, Cosenza\, Italy and grew up in Canada. She received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Alberta\, and a Ph.D. from the University of London\, England. Her thesis topic was “The Art for Art’s Sake and Decadent Movements in Nineteenth Century English and French Literature.” \nFor more than 40 years\, she has worked as a researcher\, writer\, editor\, lecturer\, executive director and curator in England and Canada. Professional accomplishments include: Science and Technology Editor\, The Canadian Encyclopedia; Executive Director\, Alberta Museums Association; and creator and Editor-in-Chief of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – www.albertasource.ca. In 2009\, the 84 multimedia websites were gifted to the University of Alberta. \nDr. Davies has a range of publications including authoring about one-third of the entries for the Collins’ Encyclopaedia of Antiques (London: Collins\, 1973; New York: Random House\, 1974); Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 1 (London: Batsford\, 1979) and Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 4 (London: Batsford\, 1981). \nHer most recent publications are the critical biography From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2014); The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello (Fernie: Oolichan Books\, 2015); and The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2016)\, an anthology that she co-edited with Jeff Keshen\, former Dean of Arts\, Mount Royal University\, Calgary. Her newest publication\, “From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History” will be published by Guernica Editions in Spring 2021. It documents the settlement history and contributions of Italian immigrants who worked on the railways\, in the coal mines of Alberta and BC\, homesteaded and also set up a range of small and large businesses. She gives Italian immigrants their rightful place in the narrative of province and nation building. \nShe has contributed entries to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for psychiatrist Charles Arthur Baragar\, horticulturist George Harcourt\, and city planner and administrator Christopher James Yorath. \nFor nearly 30 years she has worked in the museum sector in Alberta (including as Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association) and is well-known for advocacy on behalf of the sector. Dr. Davies has served on various cultural advisory committees adjudicating grants and making policy decisions including the Canada-France Cultural Accord. As a member of the Canadian Heritage Information Network Advisory Committee\, she took part in the Museums and the Web initiative that resulted in the creation of the Virtual Museum of Canada. In addition\, she was a member of the committee that helped develop Canadian policies on the digital heritage for UNESCO. \nDr. Davies served on the Government of Canada’s Cultural Sector Initiative that examined the health of the voluntary sector. She co-chaired the Research Steering Committee\, Capacity Joint Table\, responsible for designing the first-ever National Survey of Non-Profit and Voluntary Organizations as well as the benchmarking study on charities in 40 countries done by Johns Hopkins University for UNESCO. \nShe has undertaken a range of curatorial work including obtaining loans from French and British museum collections for the millennium exhibit Anno Domini: Jesus through the Centuries at the Royal Alberta Museum. She curated two travelling exhibits: “People of the Coal Mines: The Italian Community” for the Galt Museum covering communities from the Elk Valley to Drumheller; and\, “Alberta’s Italian CommunIty” with funding support from the Italian Consul General in Edmonton. In 2012\, she curated the exhibit “J. B. Taylor and the Idea of Mountains” for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies and\, in 2015\, a travelling exhibit titled “The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello” for the Fernie Museum. \nOn July 1st\, 2010\, she was invested in the Order of Canada for her role in creating the Alberta Online Encyclopedia and for her contribution to the promotion and preservation of Canada’s cultural heritage. In 2012\, she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. As a Member of the Order of Canada she officiates at Canadian citizenship ceremonies. Other awards include: the Alberta Museums Association Life Time Achievement Award\, Province of Alberta Centennial Medal\, Global Woman of Vision Award and the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the Arts. In 2015\, the Association canadienne-francaise de l’Alberta awarded her the Prix Roger Motut helping to preserve the Francophone Culture and Language of Alberta and the Italian government awarded her a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) for preserving the Italian language\, culture and traditions as well as her scholarship. Professional accomplishments include: Science and Technology Editor\, The Canadian Encyclopedia; Executive Director\, Alberta Museums Association; and creator and Editor-in-Chief of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – www.albertasource.ca. In 2009\, the 84 multimedia websites were gifted to the University of Alberta. \nDr. Davies has a range of publications including authoring about one-third of the entries for the Collins’ Encyclopaedia of Antiques (London: Collins\, 1973; New York: Random House\, 1974); Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 1 (London: Batsford\, 1979) and Dictionary of British Portraiture\, Volume 4 (London: Batsford\, 1981). \nHer most recent publications are the critical biography From Realism to Abstraction: The Art of J. B. Taylor (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2014); The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello (Fernie: Oolichan Books\, 2015); and The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (Calgary: University of Calgary Press\, 2016)\, an anthology that she co-edited with Jeff Keshen\, former Dean of Arts\, Mount Royal University\, Calgary. Her newest publication\, “From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History” will be published by Guernica Editions in Spring 2021. It documents the settlement history and contributions of Italian immigrants who worked on the railways\, in the coal mines of Alberta and BC\, homesteaded and also set up a range of small and large businesses. She gives Italian immigrants their rightful place in the narrative of province and nation building. \nShe has contributed entries to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography for psychiatrist Charles Arthur Baragar\, horticulturist George Harcourt\, and city planner and administrator Christopher James Yorath. \nFor nearly 30 years she has worked in the museum sector in Alberta (including as Executive Director of the Alberta Museums Association) and is well-known for advocacy on behalf of the sector. Dr. Davies has served on various cultural advisory committees adjudicating grants and making policy decisions including the Canada-France Cultural Accord. As a member of the Canadian Heritage Information Network Advisory Committee\, she took part in the Museums and the Web initiative that resulted in the creation of the Virtual Museum of Canada. In addition\, she was a member of the committee that helped develop Canadian policies on the digital heritage for UNESCO. \nDr. Davies served on the Government of Canada’s Cultural Sector Initiative that examined the health of the voluntary sector. She co-chaired the Research Steering Committee\, Capacity Joint Table\, responsible for designing the first-ever National Survey of Non-Profit and Voluntary Organizations as well as the benchmarking study on charities in 40 countries done by Johns Hopkins University for UNESCO. \nShe has undertaken a range of curatorial work including obtaining loans from French and British museum collections for the millennium exhibit Anno Domini: Jesus through the Centuries at the Royal Alberta Museum. She curated two travelling exhibits: “People of the Coal Mines: The Italian Community” for the Galt Museum covering communities from the Elk Valley to Drumheller; and\, “Alberta’s Italian CommunIty” with funding support from the Italian Consul General in Edmonton. In 2012\, she curated the exhibit “J. B. Taylor and the Idea of Mountains” for the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies and\, in 2015\, a travelling exhibit titled “The Rise and Fall of Emilio Picariello” for the Fernie Museum. \nOn July 1st\, 2010\, she was invested in the Order of Canada for her role in creating the Alberta Online Encyclopedia and for her contribution to the promotion and preservation of Canada’s cultural heritage. In 2012\, she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. As a Member of the Order of Canada she officiates at Canadian citizenship ceremonies. Other awards include: the Alberta Museums Association Life Time Achievement Award\, Province of Alberta Centennial Medal\, Global Woman of Vision Award and the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the Arts. In 2015\, the Association canadienne-francaise de l’Alberta awarded her the Prix Roger Motut helping to preserve the Francophone Culture and Language of Alberta and the Italian government awarded her a knighthood (Cavaliere d’Italia) for preserving the Italian language\, culture and traditions as well as her scholarship. If so\, please join us for our Stories of Canmore: Topic Deep Dives where guest speakers will add different perspectives to the themes brought up in our monthly book choice.\nDr. Lubomyr Luciuck provides insight into the Ukrainian experience of internment in the Bow Valley. \nOur book for our January book club meeting is Park Prisoners: The Untold Story of Western Canada’s National Parks by author Bill Waiser and so for our first set of deep dives we will be hearing from different experts on Internment in the Bow Valley. \nFor our first Deep Dive we warmly welcome Dr. Lubomyr Luciuck a professor at the Royal Military College in Canada. This lecture is made possible by a grant from The Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund. \nBorn in 1953 in Kingston\, ON\, to Ukrainian displaced persons parents\, he came of age at a time when Ukrainian Canadians were clamouring for a free and independent Ukraine. While the land of his parents has always held a cherished place in his heart\, It was while In university that a young Luciuk\, himself a product of the Third Wave\, met a man of the First\, who told him he was interned at Fort Henry during the First World War. Stephen has been writing since 1988\, and for nearly as long has been leading national and international conservation programs and organizations. DESCRIPTION:With the gardens in full bloom and summer finally making an appearance\, it is time to celebrate the summer season properly. The NWMP Barracks Provincial Historic Site is delighted to announce the return of a popular summer program this year on Sunday afternoons in August from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. \nArt in the Park: Sunday Social is our nod to past traditions of gathering up the entire family and bringing them to the mountains for fresh air\, picnics\, and impromptu socials. With the amazing work our volunteers have put into the gardens and grounds at the NWMP Barracks\, a Sunday Social seemed the perfect excuse to invite our friends to come round. \nIf the picturesque setting of the NWMP Barracks was not enough of a draw\, local musicians will play between 1:30pm and 3:30pm. You can expect to see musicians delivering everything from classical to jazz standard to world music while guests relax next to our amazing gardens. You can also sip from another stream of creativity while on site as we will be working with local artists and artisans to host demonstrations and “live art” while offering their pieces and products for purchase. \nMUSIC | Heather Jean Jordan \nHeather Jean Jordan is a professional Singer-Songwriter and Educator based in Banff\, Alberta. Growing up on a farm in rural Manitoba she fell in love with the magic of communal music-making and the majesty of nature. A Classically-Trained Singer & Pianist\, and Self-Taught Ukulele Player\, who loves to write\, perform and share the joy of music with all ages\, she’s been touring\, performing and teaching locally and across the prairies for the past decade. \nA firm believer in music as a natural healing instinct\, wherever the music leads\, Heather Jean follows. Genre hopping from Folk to Opera to Children’s Music\, or wherever the moment demands\, she is inexorably drawn to those perfectly human moments of togetherness\, and a sucker for a good story and a foot-tapping tune. Her intention in any performance is always to create a connection and break through the shell- be it through laughter\, tears\, or a good old fashioned happy dance. The hope being that we all come away feeling a little more hopeful\, and a lot less alone. \nARTISTS | Dana Roman and Isabelle Guilmette \nDana Roman | Since moving to small town in Canadian Rockies in 1997\, Dana became a studio artist and now works in mixed media and textiles. She won awards for her art locally\, nationally and internationally.Dana was trained as an architect and worked for 10 years in architectural firms\, before she decided to switch to art. For the next 20 years Dana was painting\, designing and manufacturing textile art pieces and artwear made of her painted silks. She wholesaled her production and one of a kind pieces through her Toronto based business Artacious. Dana’s latest pieces use upcycled\, eco-dyed\, hand made\, and painted fabrics. Dana finds inspiration for her art while hiking in the backcountry\, scrambling the mountain. \nIsabelle Guilmette | It is in the spring of 2016 that Isabelle developed a passion for Soap Making. Developing recipes with different oils and natural exfoliants was just the beginning of her creating self care products. She will be joining us to share her love of natural exfoliants and oils and the process to which she is crafting them. \nTo protect the health of our guests\, a number of measures will be in place during the Art In the Park event\, including capacity management on the grounds\, a 6 foot distance between artists\, and hand sanitizer at the entrance and at each artist tent. Visitors are highly encouraged\, though not mandated\, to wear masks.
