SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Prey to Gather
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION: PREY TO GATHER\nJoin us to celebrate the opening of our first exhibit in the newly launched Corner Gallery. Featuring textile works by Shasta McCoy\, this show opens a dialogue about feminine wisdom\, body autonomy\, sacrifice and consent from the point of view of prey animals through immersive textural experiences. \nOpening Night Schedule:\n6:30 PM: Doors open\n7:00 PM: Artist talk with Shasta McCoy\n9:00 PM – 12:00 AM: Afterparty at the Canmore Legion with DJ Mihajic \nLight refreshments\, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages\, will be served. \nAbout the exhibit\nHerds rely on generational knowledge of their ancestors to learn the routes through the land that are abundant and nourishing. The mythos of many pre-colonial traditions reveal many deities with distinct attributes of prey\, i.e. hooves\, horns and antlers\, the messages of whom have been often misrepresented or silenced by monotheism. This silencing and demonization of old deities is intertwined with the erasure of female divinity\, worth\, wisdom\, and autonomy and underpins the ruthlessness inherent in colonization. Shasta creates art rooted in feminine wisdom and radical inclusion as a deliberate act of resistance to a world that seeks to strip women of their sovereignty and inherent power. Woven throughout the exhibit are Shasta’s Woolscapes\, a collection of abstract felting\, weaving\, and macrame\, presenting themselves as landforms with interwoven systems and networks. Each Woolscape results from her intimate conversation with the materials… twists\, knots\, tangles and plots encoding narrative. The found objects in the Woolscapes are held in tension\, affording these objects an elevated position\, often with precarious attachments. This dance with fragility echoes the theme of vulnerability while flirting with the dynamic nature of balance. \nAbout the artist\nShasta McCoy is a fibre artist who engages wool as a textile and sculptural medium along with wood\, stone\, metal\, found objects and other fibers. Shasta’s relationship with fibre wool extends back to her childhood in east Tennessee on a small farm with sheep where she was active in 4-H and will forever be the 1994 Tennessee Sheep and Wool Queen. Shasta lives in Golden\, the traditional territory of the Secwépemc and Ktunaxa Nations\, where her art practice intertwines mythos and feminine wisdom. Her work explores archetypes of the divine feminine/masculine\, cyclical rhythms\, healing\, and connection to land and water. \nPlease register using the sidebar to confirm your attendance. This event is by donation; you can donate with cash or card in person\, or in advance at this link. We ask that you make an additional suggested $10 donation at the afterparty to support the Legion.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nABOUT THE TOUR \nJoin us for an intimate artist tour of the Canmore Museum’s new exhibit\, UP HIGH: The Healing Adventures of Robert Lemermeyer. Experience Robert Lemermeyer’s captivating work as he shares personal stories and anecdotes behind each piece\, revealing the profound journeys that inspired his art. The tour will be followed by an engaging Q&A session in the gallery\, providing a unique opportunity to connect with the artist and delve deeper into his creative process. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nBorn in 1966 in Edmonton Alberta\, Robert Lemermeyer discovered photography as a young boy. With an architect father\, a photographer uncle\, and most importantly\, a darkroom in the basement of his home\, nothing was foreign about a camera\, a roll of film\, and the magic the two produced together. \nLater\, Robert honed his photographic skills at Edmonton’s Northern Institute of Technology\, at workshops in New York\, and through studies at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary. Then\, assignments came from The Globe and Mail\, Azure\, L’Architecture d’ Aujourd’hui\, EnRoute and Fairmont Magazine. This work\, and many other assignments\, provided Robert the opportunity to photograph Africa’s majestic animals\, St.Petersburg’s historic canals and Japan’s mysterious Shinto shrines. \nAt present\, Robert is the owner of Lemermeyer Inc. in Calgary – a studio with an artistic focus on the Canadian Rocky Mountains. His most recent exhibition titled Relief: A Transformative Journey Through the Rockies premiered at the Bateman Gallery in Victoria\, British Columbia in 2022. \n  \nTickets for this exhibit tour are included in admission.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Canmore Historic Downtown Tour
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nCanmore has changed a great deal since it was founded in 1883\, evolving from a gritty railway depot to a coal mining town and then finally to an international resort destination. As a center first for the railroad and the industry\, Canmore was a place where you played hard and worked hard. Like many mining towns in southern Alberta and southeastern BC\, the community was faced with many economic ups and downs. Over the past century\, its history as a coal mining community has included boom-town architecture\, interesting characters\, exciting events\, and mine disasters. With the closure of the mine in 1979 and Canmore serving as a host community for the 1988 Winter Olympics\, the community has continued to evolve. Today\, it could be argued that as a resort community\, we play harder than we work as we enjoy the incredible mountain vistas and recreational amenities that Canmore offers today. \nWe invite you to experience our rich and colourful past by exploring Canmore’s built heritage and tracing the continued evolution of our community. Our Historical Downtown Walking Tour will take you to 10 places located within in 2 km radius of the Canmore Museum\, each with its own story to tell as part of the cultural and heritage mosaic of Canmore. The tour will start and end at the Canmore Museum. \nPlease register at the sidebar. \n\n\n\nABOUT YOUR GUIDE\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nRob Alexander is a journalist\, author\, photographer\, and historian. He grew up in Canmore\, steeped in the history of the Canadian West and the sights and sounds of a coal mining town. With an affinity for ruins and abandoned sites\, he gravitated towards story and sense of place\, leading him to explore and share the history and heritage of the Bow Valley\, Alberta\, and Western Canada. He is a former reporter for the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper and author of The History of Canmore\, published in 2010 by Summerthought Publishing of Banff. Rob lives in Calgary where he works as the digitization specialist for Libraries and Cultural resources at the University of Calgary.

An estimated one in five American adults suffer from some form of mental illness. Despite the billions of dollars spent in pharmaceutical research and the rising popularity of antidepressant drugs\, we are more depressed and anxious than ever before. \nWhat if we’re looking for solutions in the wrong places? What if instead of treating mental illness with prescriptions and medication\, we changed what we eat and how we feed our brains? \n  \nABOUT YOUR HOST \nBridget Ryan has called the Bow Valley home since 2018\, \, where she and Jason Carter own and operate The Carter-Ryan Gallery & Live Art Venue; a gallery by day featuring the amazing work of Indigenous artist Jason Carter. But by night\, you guessed it! Wonderful cabaret fills the walls of the gallery with song and story and yes\, there is even dancing allowed!! After 16 years hosting a morning show on television\, a published author of 5 children’s books\, numerous accolades and awards for various MC/Hosting and charitable events\, she finds herself EXACTLY where she hopes to be – bringing so much insight\, fun and laughter to those who join the Canmore Museum’s Novel Ideas events! \n  \n \n
