SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES
Canmore Chronicles
Arts and cultural organizations in Canada are striving to develop experiences that can comfortably connect with their communities in a post-pandemic world. The Canmore Museum is working to create new programming for the summer of 2021 that allows us to share the stories of our place while addressing the concerns of our visitors. To this end we are announcing a new interpretive experience for the public that we call “Canmore Chronicles”. On offer will be a selection of “brisk theatrical presentations” that visitors can choose from – each performance providing entertaining insights into the fascinating past and future of Canmore and the Bow Valley.
Performances will be limited to small audiences, randomly located within the Canmore core, and have a maximum duration of 15 minutes. We will be posting descriptions for each of our Canmore Chronicles as they are finalised.
The Roving Scientist
The Roving Scientists program (offered through a partnership between the Canadian Earth Sciences Resource Centre and the Canmore Museum), experienced a noticeable but temporary hiatus for the summer of 2020. Challenges with volunteer recruitment, navigating the large crowds at Grassi Lakes, and a much shorter operating season all contributed to the decision not to proceed this year. As we plan for the future version of this program, we are keen to work with community volunteers who are interested in sharing their knowledge and stories with residents and visitors to the Bow Valley. Our intentions are to continue providing opportunities for casual interactions with knowledgeable volunteers but we would also like to expand the kinds of interactions we offer to include more focussed presentations. If you are keen to create experiences in the Bow Valley that are rooted in science and brought to life through meaningful stories then please contact us to learn more about the opportunity
We are always looking for new volunteers to help with the program. If you love spending time outside, sharing your knowledge with visitors of all age, and learning more about the geology of our local area, then this might be the program for you! Additionally, students and recent graduates of geology or related programs who volunteer as rovers may be eligible for expense reimbursement and Apprentice Interpretive Guide Training from the Interpretive Guides Association.

ANNUAL EVENTS
Barracks Socials: Socially Distanced Social Events
With the gardens in full bloom and summer finally making an appearance, it is time to celebrate the summer season properly. The NWMP Barracks Provincial Historic Site is delighted to announce the return of a popular summer program this year on Sunday afternoons in August from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Our Barrack Socials are a nod to past traditions of gathering up the entire family and bringing them to the mountains for fresh air, picnics, and impromptu socials. With the amazing work our volunteers have put into the gardens and grounds at the NWMP Barracks, a Sunday Social seemed the perfect excuse to invite our friends to come round.
If the picturesque setting of the NWMP Barracks was not enough of a draw, local musicians will play between 1:30pm and 3:30pm. You can expect to see musicians delivering everything from classical to jazz standard to world music while guests relax next to our amazing gardens. You can also sip from another stream of creativity while on site as we will be working with local artists and artisans to host demonstrations and “live art” while offering their pieces and products for purchase.
To protect the health of our guests, a number of measures will be in place during the Art In the Park event, including capacity management on the grounds, a 6 foot distance between artists, and hand sanitizer at the entrance and at each artist tent. Visitors are highly encouraged, though not mandated, to wear masks.
Heritage Bake-Off
In celebration of Alberta Culture Days, we’re hosting a historic bake-off at the Barracks staring recipes from your family archives, your beautiful baking, and local judges!
Want to enter?
All you have to do is pick your favorite recipe from your family archives in the following categories: pies/tarts, slices, cakes, or breads and email programs@canmoremuseum.com with your choice to enter. Part of the entry will be family stories behind the recipies.
Then, simply prepare your tasty baked goods and present them at the NWMP Barracks at 2:00 pm on September 13 for the Bake-Off.
