OPENING RECEPTION: LAND OF THUNDERING SNOW
Experience the power and mystery of snow at our Opening Reception for Land of Thundering Snow!
Join us as we unveil Land of Thundering Snow, a travelling exhibition from the Revelstoke Museum & Archives that explores the history of avalanches in Canada and their profound impact on people and nature. Through historic records, photographs, recordings, and artifacts, this exhibit brings both the technical challenges and personal stories of avalanche country to life.
The evening will feature a special presentation by Chris Stethem, retired avalanche protection consultant and long-time Canmore resident. A founding member and past president of the Canadian Avalanche Association, Chris has spent decades advancing avalanche research, safety, and education in Canada and abroad. Drawing from his extensive experience, he will share insights into the evolution of avalanche forecasting and the stories behind the development of modern avalanche safety practices.
Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dogs Association (CARDA) and view objects and stories from local experts and the Canmore Museum’s own collection. Experience the exhibit with fellow enthusiasts, enjoy hands-on activities, and explore how nature’s forces shape our lives in the Bow Valley and beyond.
Light refreshments, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, will be available. Doors open at 6:30pm; presentation begins at 7pm.
